Location
The City of Clemson is located in Pickens County, South Carolina. Pickens County is in the northwestern section of South Carolina, and Clemson is in the southern portion of the county. Clemson is bordered on the north and south in part by Clemson University. The northern boundary is also shared with the Town of Central, while the southern border is shared with the Town of Pendleton. The western border is formed by Lake Hartwell, which also serves as the boundary between Pickens and Oconee Counties. The eastern portion of the city is bordered by unincorporated Pickens County and Anderson County.

Climate
The climate in the Clemson area is moderate with an average temperature of 60.6 degrees Fahrenheit. The average temperature during January in 42.3 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average July temperature is 78.3 degrees Fahrenheit. The average relative humidity is 78% at 1:00 a.m.; 82% at 7:00 a.m.; 54% at 1:00 p.m.; and 64% at 7:00 p.m. The average annual precipitation in the Greater Clemson area is 47.54 inches, and the average growing season is 224 days. The elevation of Clemson is 850 feet above sea level.

Population
Over the past thirty-five years, the population of Pickens County has more than doubled. In 1960, the population was 46,030; by 1990, it had increased to over 93,000 residents. The growth of the City of Clemson has been even faster. Since 1960, the city's population has risen 597%: from 1,587 to 11,939. Growth of the city during the 1960's has been attributed to an aggressive annexation policy which tripled the size of Clemson during the decade. As the chart below shows, the population of the city and county is growing at a steady rate.

Based on historical trends, the projections for the city's population are closely tied to those of Clemson University. However, other variables should also be taken into account when projecting Clemson's population, including county population and a local adjustment factor. Government
The City of Clemson has a council form of government. There are six members on the City Council, plus the Mayor. Both the Mayor and City Council members are elected at large and serve four year, staggered terms. The Mayor serves as the presiding officer during Council meetings. The Council hires a City Administrator who oversees the day-to-day business of the city. Clemson has had three Administrators during its history. The first was Rob Ware, who served from 1976 to 1980. Charles Helsel served as Administrator from 1980 to 1995. Richard Cotton has held this position since January, 1996.
