Proposed Substation

Proposed Substation

Off Pendleton Road

The Death Valley substation and transmission line rebuild project is a system reliability enhancement project needed to support future energy growth for the city of Clemson and surrounding areas. A new substation will be located on the easternmost point of Clemson University property, near the intersection of Pendleton Road and Highway 76 – an area closest to the load center where the demand for electricity is the highest.

As part of the system enhancement, a 1.2-mile portion of double-circuit, 44-kilovolt transmission line will be rebuilt between 550 Old Greenville Highway and Rock Creek Road to meet 100-kV reliability standards. As part of the rebuild process, a temporary line will be constructed, existing wood H-frame poles removed, and permanent 90-foot steel monopole structures installed. These new structures will be stronger, more reliable and require less maintenance. In addition, a new 475-foot, 100-kV tap line will be installed to connect the rebuilt line to the existing Summey Street substation near Old Greenville Highway.
